Our church has always had a food pantry, often a few groceries in a closet. Through the years the number of people experiencing food insecurity has grown exponentially. We get our food through donations from the community, shopping at local stores with funds donated by others and we are a member agency of the Southeast Alaska Food Bank.
We try to be open each Wednesday of the year, closing only for weather too severe to clear the walkway or for the volunteers to get into Douglas from their homes. People are hungry whether it is a holiday or whether the day is cold and snowy or warmer and rainy.
If you are interested we need volunteers weekly to staff the pantry and help people with their access to the food. We also need donations of food and non-perishable items.
